Program Title:

Concrete Evidence that the Lean Approach Saves Time and Money

Speaker:

David MacNeel, Baker Concrete

Abstract:

Does the lean approach really make a difference in project performance?  During our October chapter meeting we will learn about a very unique situation which compares lean and traditional delivery approaches in the most direct manner possible.

Date and Time:

Tuesday, October 5, 2010 11:00am - 1:00pm (Lunch Included)

Registration / Cancellation Deadline: Thursday, September 30, 2010.  There will be no refunds after this time. Each person must register and pay to attend the meeting and dinner. Please help us save time, expense, and avoid people showing up at the last minute… plan ahead and register early! We cannot keep costs reasonable and caterers cannot plan their food without sufficient notice.

Late Registration Deadline: Wednesday, October 5, 2010.  Available after closing of regular registration. Completed registrations are still subject to availability.

Value-Added Proposition:

Imagine:

·         Two very large and essentially identical structures

·         Each involving more than 100,000 cubic yards of cast in place concrete

·         Done concurrently to a very tight schedule

·         On the same jobsite

·         By the same contractor

·         With workers from the same labor pool

·         For the same owner

·         One done with a traditional approach and one done with lean methodology.

How could you arrange for a better comparison?  Our speaker, David MacNeel from Baker Concrete will describe just this arrangement and will provide a colorful and informative account of how the project using lean methods was done in less time, for less money and with a better safety record.   Dave will also address how it was possible for a specialty contractor to successfully implement lean techniques on a jobsite with a decidedly “non lean” orientation.   Dave will also describe how he has addressed introducing lean methodology within his company, providing insights that will help many potential lean implementers with their journey.

LCI Cascadia Community of Practice

The Lean Construction Institute (LCI), a non-profit research organization, was founded in August 1997. LCI's purpose is to develop and disseminate new knowledge regarding the management of work in design, engineering and construction for capital facilities. LCI has developed the Lean Project Delivery System© (LPDS), and the Last Planner® System of production control. Lean Construction is a production management-based approach to project delivery - a new way to design and build capital facilities. Lean production management has caused a revolution in manufacturing design, supply and assembly. Applied to construction, Lean changes the way work is done throughout the delivery process. Lean Construction extends from the objectives of a lean production system - maximize value and minimize waste - to specific techniques and applies them in a new project delivery process extending from project definition through design, supply and assembly.

The Cascadia Community of Practice (CoP) of LCI serves the BC, WA, and OR region, providing local lean support to owners, architects and designers, engineers, contractors, specialty contractors, and suppliers.  We invite owners and project delivery team members to meet together as a local user group to learn, share, and develop a lean community. As a regional forum for conversations among practitioners, the CoP will help create a new common sense for the AEC industry as LCI continues to build knowledge in design and construction.
